How Section Breaks Work in Google Docs

Google Docs keeps its break tools in one place: the Insert > Break menu. There you will find a plain page break (also on Ctrl+Enter), a column break, and two kinds of section break — Section break (next page), which starts the new section at the top of a fresh page, and Section break (continuous), which starts it on the same page. Section breaks are what let different parts of one document have their own margins, page orientation, page numbering, and headers or footers.

You may also have section breaks you never inserted. Changing the page orientation of selected text, adjusting margins for part of a document, or restarting page numbers all quietly create sections behind the scenes. And because Google Docs draws no marker for any of this by default, the first sign is usually a symptom: a page that starts lower than it should, numbering that jumps, or an apparently blank page that refuses to leave after the document is downloaded as a Word file.

How to Delete a Section Break in Google Docs (Step by Step)

Step 1: Make section breaks visible

Open the View menu and click "Show section breaks" (in some versions it lives under View > Show non-printing characters). Every section break in the document now appears as a blue dotted line across the page. Unlike Word, Google Docs has no ¶ toggle on a toolbar — this menu setting is the only way to see where the breaks are.

Step 2: Click at the very end of the line above the break

Place your cursor after the last character of the line immediately above the blue dotted line. The break behaves like an invisible character sitting at the end of that line, so this position puts your cursor directly in front of it.

Step 3: Press Delete (forward delete)

Press the Delete key on Windows or Fn+Delete on a Mac keyboard without a dedicated forward-delete key. The blue dotted line disappears and the content below merges into the section above. Alternatively, click at the very start of the line below the break and press Backspace.

Step 4: Check the formatting where the sections merged

Deleting the break merges two sections into one, so section-level settings — margins, page orientation, page numbering, and per-section headers or footers — now come from a single section. Skim the affected pages and reapply anything that changed via File > Page setup or Insert > Headers & footers.

How Google Docs Differs from Word

If you are used to Word, three differences matter. First, the type list is shorter: Google Docs offers only Next Page and Continuous section breaks, while Word adds Even Page and Odd Page variants for book-style layouts — our guide to inserting section breaks in Word covers all four. Second, visibility works differently: Word reveals breaks through the ¶ formatting-marks toggle, while Google Docs uses a dedicated View-menu setting and draws breaks as blue dotted lines instead of labeled text. Third, deleting is more forgiving in Google Docs. In Word, a break is anchored to a paragraph mark, and the break at the very end of a document often cannot be deleted directly because it defines the final section. Google Docs has no equivalent trap — any break you can see, you can delete with a single keypress.

One behavior is the same in both apps, and it is the one that surprises people: deleting a section break merges the two sections, and the merged region ends up with a single set of section-level settings. If the sections had different orientations or headers, expect the result to change — the fix is to reapply the settings you want, not to fear the deletion.

What Happens When You Import or Export a .docx

Section breaks travel with the file, imperfectly. Importing a Word document into Google Docs keeps Next Page and Continuous breaks as real section breaks, but Word-only features are simplified: Even Page and Odd Page breaks lose their odd/even behavior and act like plain Next Page breaks, and unsupported section formatting may be dropped. Exporting with File > Download > Microsoft Word (.docx) converts every Google Docs section break back into a native Word section break inside the file's XML — including breaks Google Docs created silently when you changed orientation or numbering for part of the document.

That export path is how a clean-looking Google Doc becomes a Word file with a stubborn blank page: a Next Page break lands on an empty paragraph, and Word dutifully starts a new page for nothing. A Next Page section break sitting where no content follows is the classic culprit.
